I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a BA in Biology. From a very young age I knew I would be a scientist. I used to sneak baking soda and vinegar into my bathroom and conduct experiments in old pickle jars. I always loved singing and writing songs as a little girl as well. At family gatherings my family would get me to stand on the hearth in the middle of the room and I would make up songs on the spot - most notably about treefrogs. Now that I have finished school, I have to balance my two passions: (animal) science and music.
By the week, I am a passionate animal biology lab technician!
By the weekend I am Kristi Dixon Yow: singer/ songwriter.
I began writing songs about my own life. Looking back, it was theraputic. It was a way for me to complain about and deal with my adolescent problems with friends and boys. My mom taught me a few chords on the guitar when I was 11, and I took off on my own by reading chord charts from there. My dad took a liking to my songwriting while I was still in middle school and decided to help me get the songs recorded in a studio. We literally went to Google and typed in, "How to record a CD." We picked the first website and flew out to recording studio in Oklahoma to do something we easily could have done one town over. *Face palm* But we didn't know any better. By the time I was 13, I had 8 professionally recorded songs on a disc we were calling "Emotions". (Emotions of an overdramatic 13 year old girl, lol) I generally cringe looking back at those songs, but it was a start! After that my dad helped me get gigs ALL OVER North Carolina.
And here I am, more than 10 years later, still in love with writing music and getting to share my music with the world, one farmer's market at a time. :)
